Welcome to The Oxenham Arms South Zeal. A former 12th-century Benedictine monastery, constructed around The South Zeal menhir, a neolithic standing stone. Later manor house of the great 16th-century pirate Captain John Oxenham, the first English sea captain to sail into the Pacific and an ally to Sir Francis Drake

Today a Hotel and AA Rosette Restaurant set in the heart of South Zeal, one of the most beautiful villages in Devon.

Affectionately called "The Ox" by its customers since our bar first opened 544 years ago in the year 1477. The stunning building itself is now 851 years old. We have 7 beautiful hotel rooms.

We have lovely gardens with wonderful views of Dartmoor. Our restaurant has been awarded the AA Rosette Award for culinary excellence every year since 2016 along with the AA Gold Dinner Award.

We are child-friendly throughout. Dogs on leads welcome in our bar and gardens.

The 1477 Bar

​​​​The 1477 bar is the oldest CAMRA heritage bar in Devon and Cornwall.  This beautiful bar is 544 years old. Roaring log fire. Full of locals and visitors alike. 100 whiskies, 100 gins, 30 rums, 20 ports, 100 wines, draft local Ales and Ciders.

Weddings & Functions


Wedding receptions are regularly provided for small weddings at St . Marys Church South Zeal adjacent to The Ox, or large weddings at St Andrews Church South Tawton 5 mins away.We regularly organise special theme fun events, simply look on our Events page for details

Lunches & Sunday Lunches


​Lovely lunches are served from 12 mid-day until 2.30 PM (last orders).  Vegan, Vegetarian, and Gluten-Free options are also available. We are family-friendly. Dogs on leads are welcome in our bar and gardens

Our Patio and beautiful gardens have seating for 150 people in dry weather we can serve you food in the gardens.

All hotel guestrooms are serviced daily unless requested otherwise by the guests themselves.

​Our restaurants serve dinner from 5.30 PM until 9 PM (last orders). Choose to eat in either our Monastery Restaurant, The Grill, The Snug, or the 1477 Bar. A la carte AA Rosette menu with nightly specials.

We have many beautiful rooms at The Ox and by pre-booking​ we can arrange a private room for your special meal or function,

Children & Dogs 


Children accompanied by adults are always welcome. Dogs on leads are welcome in our 1477 bar and gardens

Visit The Oxenham Arms Hotel


Constructed in the late 1100s by Benedictine monks around a Neolithic Standing Stone. In the 1300's became The Oxenham Manor, then birthplace to the Elizabethan pirate Captain John Oxenham. Rated by Heritage England as having the finest facade of any building of its period in Devon, Outside, stunning views of Dartmoor from its 5 acres of gardens and grounds.

National Trust Finch Foundry


Just a 5 minute walk from The Oxenham Arms Hotel. This wonderful Victorian National Trust attraction tells the story of how the last working water powered forge in England operated through the centuries. With regular talks, tours , a shop and tea shop in the gardens

Local Dartmoor Walks


The Oxenham Arms Hotel is in The Dartmoor National Park yet only 5 mins. drive off the A30 to Cornwall. We have designed a series of 5 beautiful South Zeal village and local Dartmoor walks. From 30 mins up to 5 hours. Walk up to the prehistoric Cawsand Beacon or follow The Tarka Trail.


Medieval South Zeal Village


Walk around this ancient village with The Oxenham Arms Hotel at its heart. Lovely thatched cottages, Village Shop and Tea Room, walks onto Dartmoor. Ten minute walk to South Tawton village with its beautiful St Andrews Church, or Sticklepath and the Finch Foundry.


Beaches and Coastlines


We are just 40 minutes from Devon and Cornwall beaches like Bude, Dawlish, Torquay or Teignmouth. The beautiful Widemouth Bay and the many surfers paradises. Padstow in Cornwall is 50 minutes drive from us along the A30.

National Trust Castle Drogo


A 20 minute drive from us, this stunning Castle constructed between 1911 and 1930 is made from Dartmoor granite. Fully restored in the past 7 years, the National Trusts most expensive single project ever. The gardens are by Lutyens.

We have just returned from a three day break at this hotel and it far exceeded our expectations. The owners Lynne and Simon were very accommodating and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The room was very clean, comfortable bed and quality bedding. The food was delicious. We would definitely consider staying there again.
